National Provider Identifier (NPI) Information
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) mandated adoption of a standard unique health identifier for health care providers. This new identifier, the National Provider Identifier (NPI), will replace many existing national (e.g. UPIN), state (e.g. Medicaid), and proprietary provider identifiers. Beginning on May 23, 2007, all health plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, and private health plans must accept and use NPIs in standard electronic HIPAA transactions. The health care industry is recommending that practitioners apply for an NPI in advance of the May 2007 implementation deadline to prevent this transition from negatively impacting their business.

Need an NPI?

To obtain an NPI, or if you have questions about NPIs – visit the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) website. From the NPPES site you may either submit an electronic application or download a paper application.

Helpful Hints:

  • Review application requirements and gather all relevant data prior to beginning the application process. All required data fields must be completed.
  • Document your user name/password for future updates to NPPES data.
  • Store the email notification reporting your new NPI.
